On September 19, 2021, Cumbre Vieja Mountain erupted on La Palma in the Canary Islands. The event lasted 85 days, the longest and the most damaging eruption on the island since record keeping began. Total damage was just under 1 billion US dollars. The lava flow, about 2.2 miles wide at its widest point and about 3.9 miles long, destroyed more than 3,000 buildings.
